We cannot be focused solely on what the scale reflects. If you do you will be in for more ups and downs that a roller coaster. You have to balance it out with Non-Scale Victories (NSV).
An NSV is where you notice you are sleeping better, your general mood has improved, your energy level has increased, mental clarity is better, and clothes are fitting differently. This isn’t an all inclusive list by any means. Each person experiences different NSVs, but what we can all do is record and celebrate them.
By taking the time to record them will give you insight into what is working and what is not. For instance, if you were seeing big changes in body shape and then you change something, for example you change something about your nutrition or training – to keep it general) then you may notice that your changes slow down. Sure you may plateau or it could be a direct result of the changes you made.
Because no two people or EXACTLY alike, we can tweak and customize our fitness and nutrition plans to best suit our goals. Recording scale changes and NSV are one of the best ways to see what is working for you and what isn’t. It allows you to tweak your meals, your workouts, and even your timing of when you eat or when you workout so that you can maximize results!
We all want the maximum return on our investment and if you are going to the trouble of putting in the effort we want to see results!
Which is why planning is so important. I am sure you’ve heard this before, but a failure to plan is a plan to fail. If you aren’t planning, prepping, and making ready what you will need for the day or the week you will revert back to old habits that will derail you faster than you realize – trust me I know!
Simple things like meal prep on Sunday for a week’s worth of meals, packing your bag for the gym or laying out your clothes the night before might seem trivial, but can afford you more time in the morning for other things.
The point is this, don’t fly by the seat of your pants your else you’ll land on your behind! Be specific in what you want, plan accordingly, and take your time. The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. So get started.
